Electricity consumption at the campsite: how much does it cost and how can you save money?
With rising energy prices, more and more people are paying attention to their electricity consumption – even during the holidays. Whether you are travelling with a caravan, motorhome, trailer tent or tent, it is useful to know in advance how much electricity you will consume and what it will cost. At Camping de Berken, you pay € 0.60 per kWh. In this blog, we give you clear examples of electricity consumption at the campsite, so you won't be faced with any surprises.
Commonly used appliances: how much do they consume per day?
An overview of appliances that campers often use, with their estimated daily electricity consumption and the associated costs:
Camping refrigerator (on 24 hours a day): approx. 2.5 kWh per day = € 1.50
Kettle (2000 watts, 10 minutes per day): 0.33 kWh = € 0.20
Electric heater (1000 watts, 3 hours per day): 3 kWh = € 1.80
Television (50 watts, 4 hours per day): 0.2 kWh = € 0.12
Charging a phone (5 watts, 3 hours per day): 0.015 kWh = € 0.01
Examples: daily power consumption at the campsite
1. Caravan with refrigerator, kettle and coffee maker
Refrigerator: 2.5 kWh = € 1.50
Kettle: 0.33 kWh = € 0.20
Coffee maker: 0.3 kWh = € 0.18
Total: 3.13 kWh per day = € 1.88
2. Caravan with refrigerator, boiler, kettle, coffee maker
Refrigerator: 2.5 kWh = € 1.50
Boiler (1200 watts, on all day): 2 – 4 kWh = € 1.20 – € 2.40
Kettle: 0.33 kWh = € 0.20
Coffee maker: 0.3 kWh = € 0.18
Total: 5.63–7.13 kWh per day = € 3.08 – € 4.28
3. Caravan with refrigerator, boiler, heating, kettle, coffee maker
Refrigerator: 2.5 kWh = € 1.50
Boiler: 2–4 kWh = € 1.20 – € 2.40
Electric heating (800 watts, 8 hours): 6.4 kWh = € 3.84
Kettle: 0.33 kWh = € 0.20
Coffee maker: 0.3 kWh = € 0.18
Total: 11.53–13.53 kWh per day = € 6.92– € 8.12
4. Tent or trailer tent with cool box or small fridge
Cool box (40 watts, 24 hours on): 0.96 kWh = € 0.58
Small refrigerator: 0.6 kWh = € 0.36
Total: € 0.36 – € 0.58 per day
How much does it cost to charge an electric bike at the campsite?
An average e-bike battery has a capacity of 0.5 kWh.
Cost per charge: 0.5 kWh x € 0.60 = € 0.30
Induction cooking at the campsite: how much electricity does it use?
A 2000-watt induction hob uses 2 kWh per hour.
30 minutes of cooking = 1 kWh = € 0.60 per day
How much electricity does electric underfloor heating in a caravan use?
Average consumption: 150 watts per m²
For 2 m² of floor space (300 watts), 8 hours per day: 2.4 kWh
Cost per day: 2.4 x € 0.60 = € 1.44
How do you calculate your own electricity consumption at the campsite?
Look at the power (watts) of your appliance
Divide this by 1000 to convert it to kWh per hour
Multiply this by the number of hours per day that you use the device
Multiply this by the electricity price (€ 0.60 per kWh)
Example: A 1000-watt electric heater that is on for 3 hours per day:
1000 / 1000 = 1 kWh per hour
1 kWh x 3 hours = 3 kWh per day
3 x £ 0.60 = £1.80 per day
Saving electricity at the campsite: 6 useful tips
- Use energy-efficient LED bulbs
- Switch appliances off completely instead of leaving them on standby
- Boil water on a gas stove instead of an electric kettle
- Use a solar panel or power bank for small appliances
- Set the refrigerator to a lower setting or turn it off when you are away for the day
- Turn off your boiler if you do not use it or use it infrequently
By using electricity consciously, you can keep your costs low and contribute to a more sustainable stay.
