The advantages of a Staycation

More and more people have (re)discovered the advantages of the so-called "Staycation": holidaying in your own country. For instance, a holiday at home is easily a lot cheaper than a summer holiday abroad, especially in the high season.

Compared to a flying holiday, a holiday in the Netherlands is a lot less harmful to the environment. You also support the local economy and entrepreneurs who have (suffered) a lot from the current situation. So if you want to go on a climate-friendly holiday this year: stay in the Netherlands, there are plenty of beautiful things to experience there too.

On summer holiday in Drenthe

Drenthe is a province known for its beautiful natural areas and special places of interest. So what is there to do? A tour of Drenthe in brief:

Culture and history? There are plenty of opportunities for that in Drenthe: How about the Hunebedcentrum in Borger? From Camping de Berken it is just a fifteen-minute cycle ride. Learn everything about the dolmens and the special times in which people lived then.

A stone's throw from Camping de Berken is the Drouwenerzand Amusement Park. In 2021, the park was voted the best outing of Drenthe by the ANWB, so it is definitely worth a visit. Great fun for big and small! Will you go for a ride in the Hunebed8baan, the Wild West Swing or splash around in the Waterplein? Whatever you do, in the summer holidays you will at least have nice weather.

Now you can already encounter lots of wild animals (such as Drentse heath sheep or Scottish Highlanders) during a walk across one of the beautiful nature reserves, but for the real adventure, of course you go to Wildlands Adventure Zoo - just a short car ride from the campsite.

If you are at Camping de Berken, you are already close to Geopark de Hondsrug. The penultimate ice age (there were several) not only carried huge boulders from Scandinavia to Drenthe, but the power of the ice also made a lasting impression on nature. The rivers that flowed under the ice created the hilly landscape we still know today as the Hondsrug.
